The Urban Development Minister M Venkaiah Naidu announced on Thursday, 27-Jan-2016 the very first list if 20 cities which will be developed as Smart Cities. The city list was an impressive one with Bhubaneshwar making it first, Pune making it second and Jaipur at a third place.

What being on this list means – These cities will be developed to have sanitation and solid waste management, basic infrastructure through assured water and power supply,efficient urban mobility and public transport, e-governance, IT connectivity and citizen participation.
The Minister stated, “The states selected cities and sent us a list of 97 names. There was a competition among these names and 20 cities have been selected. Bottom up approach has been the key planning principle under Smart City Mission”.
The Narendra Modi govt. has an ambitious plan of building these smart cities by 2022.
