EgyptAir Flight 181 with 60 people onboard including seven crew members was on a scheduled journey from Alexandria to Cairo when it was veered off course on Tuesday morning. The plane landed in Cyprus after being hijacked by a man claiming to be wearing a suicide belt.
Initial reports claimed the hijacker was demanding “political asylum”. Later it became known that the hijacker may have personal motives and related to an ex-wife on the island.
The hijacker’s motives are still unclear; however the hijacking may not be related to “terrorism” as clarified by the Cypriot President. Most of the passengers have been released except for the crew members and four foreigners and negotiations are under way.
