‘Captain Cool’, Mahendra Singh Dhoni on Wednesday evening called it quits and stepped down as the Indian Captain for ODI and T20 format. The only silver lining being he will still be available for selection as a wicketkeeper-batsman for the India-England series.
Watch Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s Decision to step down-
As the nation debates and slowly accepts Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s decision, let’s recap few phenomenal captaincy decisions and qualities that made this legend – Mahendra Singh Dhoni! 5th being our personal favorite!
#1 Promoting himself ahead of Yuvraj Singh and winning the 2011 World Cup final in Mumbai
India was chasing a mammoth total of 275 and the dismissals of the opening batsman and Kohli at the wrong time had the nation worried. Just when everyone expected Yuvraj, in walked Dhoni and won the second ODI World Cup for India with a splendid six.
#2 Asking Joginder Sharma to bowl the final over during inaugural T20 World Cup summit clash against Pakistan and winning it in style
It was expected that Dhoni would utilize the experience of senior bowlers for the crunch over, but he let his gut and instinct take over and there were no regrets as Joginder Sharma took the precious wicket of Misbah-ul-haq in the last over for India to win the debut T20 World Cup.
#3 Handling Hatred for his Bold Decisions
People hated Dhoni for dropping legends like Sourav Ganguly and Rahul Dravid for the 2008 CB series, but when Gautam Gambhir and Rohit Sharma flourished under MSD’s captaincy, all was forgotten. Dhoni always insisted on fresh legs and a young team for 2011 WC and even though he was heavily criticized for his decisions, all worked for the best when India won the 2011 World Cup.
#4 Large Heart
Ganguly, who was playing his last Test match was asked by then new Captain MSD to lead the team towards the end of their 172 run win over Australia. This proved that even though he had dropped the left-handed batsman, his respect for the legend was never less.
#5 Calm Demeanor
Dhoni regained his fan base throughout the world when in WC 2015, he asked Hardik Pandya to bowl the last over. Bangladesh required only two runs to knock off India from the WC, but Dhoni was calm and composed till the very end. The last ball of the match which Shuvagata Hom missed went straight to MSD and he charged towards the stump taking off his wicket keeper gloves and dismantled the stumps before the batsman could take a single.
India won the match by 1 run!
We will definitely miss this legendary Captain Cool!
