Story – Laila (Kalki Koechlin) afflicted with Cerebral Palsy lives in Delhi as a part of a tight knit Middle class family believes in spending her life on her terms and not let her condition determine the outcome. Writing songs for the College band, Laila is like every other young Lady her age, her curiosity ranges between everything and Sex, which makes her mother (Revathi) nervous. As life continues its course, Laila is offered a Scholarship to New York University which she embraces with abundant enthusiasm. At University Laila befriends Khanum (Sayani Gupta), who is a young lady of South Asian origin (Bangladeshi and Pakistani) and is afflicted with blindness and falls in love with her. Enter Jared (William Moseley) who is in Laila’s classes at University and Laila discovers her sexuality in most interesting ways.
Movie Scan – Kalki Koechlin is a powerhouse of performance in Margarita with a straw with a pitch perfect performance. It is a self-discovery journey and is portrayed in such a way that you will fall in love with the character of Laila but will not pity her. Her struggle to understand and explore her sexuality with such realism and it is a never before been addressed. Shonali Bose has made this movie with such grace and beauty, Kudos to her, it was a lovely journey. Revathy as Laila’s mother has such subtle influences here and there, she gives balance to Laila’s character. It is depicted in such a way; the audience will feel Laila’s disability fading away slowly. Sayani has an electric presence and what a show. The bath tub scene where Laila opens her heart is a very pivoting scene. I would love to see more such movies.
