When you think about a ‘model’, the image which comes to your mind is ‘A beautiful woman with the perfect body’. Well, who decides the perfect body definition? Unfortunately us and we have got it wrong all this while! Lakme Fashion Week is mending the definition of beautiful by introducing their first ever plus size models. Way to go Lakme!
The Judges Panel
Few weeks back, Lakme conducted their first ever plus size model auditions which received a whooping response! More than 160 models from all over the country came to Mumbai to fulfill their modeling dream! The judges panel for the auditions included designer Shilpa Chavan of Little Shilpa, actress Divya Khosla Kumar, fashion choreographer Lubna Adams, Manish Aziz, the head of aLL: The Plus Size Store and IMG reliance VP Jaspreet Chandok.
There was no age or sex barrier for the audition. Only prerequisite was a minimum 34 inch waist for women and a minimum 40 inch waist for men. Now that is a trend breaker indeed, a strong message sent across by Lakme.
Here is what Divya Khosla, one of the judges said, “Embrace who you are and what you are. Confidence is all that matters to carve your identity and niche. Designer clothing should come in all sizes, why just for a certain body type? She also added, “Why must plus size women not be categorized as models. Happiest girls are the prettiest”.
Here are the smiling faces of the winning models –
Amber Qureshi, one of the winners poured her heart out saying, “Unfortunately, most assignments for plus-sized models perpetuate that tone —that we are clumsy, unfit, caricatures. So, I avoid such offers… I don’t want to give the impression that I am someone you can laugh at”. She further mentioned that “I am not here to be TunTun or Bharti, no disrespect to them.”
Respect is all we have got to say about this new refreshing mindset! Stylewhack hopes this is just a beginning and this step helps the society forgo the ‘conservative’ take on beauty to finally accept that “Confidence and happiness is what matters in order to look beautiful”.
