Each one of us has experienced mild to severe form of stomach ache at one point of time or another. While there may be a hundred reasons for that disturbing ache, most of the causes are benign and the symptoms usually pass quickly. So there’s generally no need to look beyond your kitchen for an easy solution to this problem.
When you have that bothersome stomach ache, it can be really difficult to concentrate on anything. Irrespective of the reason behind the stomach ache, you want it to go away fast.
Ginger is known as a cure from pain to nausea and everything in between. Since ancient times, people have turned to ginger as an effective treatment for some kinds of stomach upset.
As an antioxidant and having anti-inflammatory properties, ginger helps regulate the digestion process and in turn reduces stomach pain. Plus, ginger increases digestive juices and neutralizes stomach acids as well as helps decrease the production of free radicals. Available in different forms, ginger makes up great recipe to get rid of that depressing stomach ache.
Recipe for refreshing ginger tea
- Cut fresh ginger root into thin slices
- Boil one cup of water and add ginger slices, continue boiling for three minutes and then simmer for another five minutes
- Remove from heat, and strain the tea
- Add honey to taste as you sip it leisurely
- For better results, drink ginger tea two or three times a day
Ajwain, Caraway and other herbal seeds
There are certain kinds of herbs that are great for digestion known as carminatives. The best examples of these are caraway seeds, cumin seeds, coriander seeds and ajwain (sometimes called carom seeds). While caraway seeds are rich in vitamins and minerals, they also help you get rid of bad bacteria causing indigestion, gas and bloating.
Ways to use herbal seeds for stomach ache
- Chew on a generous pinch of caraway seeds after meal and also when you feel gas in your stomach.
- Get instant relief from stomach pain and bloating with four parts of ajwain and one part of black salt mixed with half tablespoon of water.
- Add 1 tsp of ajwain, 8-10 drops of lemon juice and pinch of black salt to ½ cup of warm water for immediate relief from stomach pain.
- Caraway seeds tea- add a cup of hot water to 1 tsp of caraway seeds. Cover and steep for 8-10 minutes. Strain and drink this herbal tea thrice a day.
Peppermint leaves act as a natural analgesic because of the presence of menthol and are a great remedy for nausea and upset stomach.
There are a number of ways in which you can benefit from peppermint be it by brewing a cup of peppermint or spearmint tea, sniffing peppermint extract, sucking on a minty candy or just by chewing on the leaves. It is an excellent remedy to keep stomach pangs at bay and alleviate feelings of nausea.
Asafoetida, more commonly known as hing, has an antispasmodic and antiflatulent property which helps treat stomach aches caused by gas or indigestion.
- Add a pinch of asafoetida to a glass of warm water and drink this two or three times a day. A pinch of rock salt added to this mix can work wonders and is effective for both a stomach ache and gas.
Alternatively, prepare a solution with one teaspoon of asafoetida to a cup of warm water. Soak a cotton cloth in the solution and place it on your stomach for 10 to 15 minutes several times a day. This will reduce pain and soothe the stomach.
When to see a doctor
The above remedies work well at reducing most of the stomach aches, however at times a stomach pain can be an indicator of a more serious problem than what meets the eye. If your symptoms persist for prolonged periods or you have trouble keeping water down, it is time to see a doctor immediately. Another reason to visit a doctor is when you are consistently having stomach troubles after eating certain variety of foods or when you are engaged in specific activities.
A quick trip to your family doctor can rule out a food allergy or a specific disease and any other important concerns.
