Friends has been a cult favorite of almost everybody who is born in the 1980s and after that. There is hardly anybody who has not seen the show or is not a fan of it. A cheerful, hearty show which showcased the lives of 6 friends and their daily struggles, their relationships, their love lives and most importantly the bond of friendship that held them together through thick and thin. The actors gave complete justice to the characters, almost becoming one with them.
The show ran for 10 years and with its winning combination of laughter, heart, hope and reality, is one of the most successful shows on television even now. Even after 10 years of it being off the air, the channels continue to make their money through the reruns. FRIENDS inspired many other shows to try their hand at the successful format. Some became successful; some were quite up to the mark while most tanked horribly. But none have come even close to the beauty that Ross, Rachel, Phoebe, Joey, Monica and Chandler have added to our lives.
Let’s take a look at these successors, who tried to copy the show’s storyline.
How I met Your Mother
The story about the protagonist Ted Mosby and his journey towards finding his wife is what can be the closest, any show has ever gotten to the success of friends. The story takes us into the houses of 5 friends and their life stories. The show built up a good suspense about the mother but with twist ending, left the audience quite disappointed.
Big Bang Theory
BBT is the most successful running show on television right now. It is like the theme of FRIENDS with science geeks. The characters sure grow on you as it takes you through the lives of brilliant scientists and a pretty neighbor girl.
Based in Chicago, the show takes us through the lives of 6 friends who try to stick to their eccentricities and each other through life’s thick and thin. Not much original thought has gone into making the characters and with only a few twists to the original, this show looks like a badly thought out version of FRIENDS. No wonder it ran for 3 seasons only.
3 guys and 1 girl sharing an apartment. Add in a few other friends and that is the format of the show. A really irritating protagonist, trying to be off beat and cute in the middle of a bunch of typical New York dudes, the audience refused to buy into it and it finally went off the air in 2014.
Courtney Cox from the FRIENDS cast had the only successful show running after FRIENDS. Cougar town is a bunch of suburban, slightly older friends. Courtney carries the neurotic Monika into this new show. This show ran for 6 seasons.
Friends with better lives
2 couples and 2 singles, living in their mid thirties, wishing they had what the other person had. Though it was a good ensemble, the show failed to see the daylight for more than one season.
That 70s show
A coming of age story again, about a group of friends, set in the early 70s. The show started 4 years after F.R.I.E.N.D.S. The colors and the weed smoke filled sitcom was a refreshing retro take on the whole done-to-death friendship story. The show went on for 7 seasons and though not as popular as its inspiration, it still managed to captivate the audience.
