Does a story about women finding their own paths to fulfill their desires sound intriguing? The trailer of “Lipstick under my Burkha” dropped today and it takes us through the journey of 4 women who are dealing with their hidden desires and how they find ways to achieve what their heart wants. The film, produced by Prakash Jha and directed by Alankrita Shrivastava has the acting genius of Ratna Pathak Shah and Konkona Sen-Sharma in leading roles. The film also features Aahana Kumra, Plabita Borthakur, Vikrant Massey, Sushant Singh and Shashank Arora. A beautician, a widow, a college girl and an oppressed housewife, are the protagonists of this tale.
In a country where a woman having any wishes of her own is still something that is frowned upon, leave aside acting on them, these women find their own small ways of claiming them. The story is set in Bhopal. The trailer is bold, real, fun and very beautiful. Lipsticks are supposed to be flaunted, not hidden behind heavy veils. And when they are covered by society enforced drapes, the women find their own ways of rebelling against the oppression.
The trailer makes us wanting to know more about the journey of these spunky women who try to break out of their stifled existence. You can check out the delightful trailer here:
The deeper message of the story comes out beautifully even in the short trailer. Every woman has the right to live her dreams, to live a little for herself rather than others, and not give up on her desires.
The film is slated to me screened at MAMI Mumbai International Film Festival on 26th October. It will also be screened in competition in the Future of Asian Cinema section of Tokyo International Film Festival, which will run from October 25 to November 3.
