– Born on 29th August 1905, Dhyan Chand is famously remembered for winning Three Olympic Gold Medals for India between 1928 and 1936.

– Dhyan Chand had a habit of practicing Hockey in the moonlight, as flood lights were not available during those days and hence earned the nickname “Chand”.

– One of the famous hockey matches of Dhyan Chand was during the 1936 Olympic match against Germany. Germany was leading 1-0 at half time and by the end of the match India had outscored Germany by 8-1, out of which six goals were scored by Dhyan Chand. So humiliated was Hitler by the shameful loss of Germans, that he walked out of the ground in fury post half time. If rumors are to be believed Dhyan Chand was offered the post of Colonel by Hitler in the German army, but being a true patriot he declined the offer.

– 29th August is celebrated as National Sports Day in India where the President of India gives sports related awards like the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award and the Dronacharya Award at Rashtrapati Bhawan on this day.

– Dhyan Chand Award is India’s highest award for lifetime achievement in sports. Sportspeople are honored with this award for their brilliant contribution pre and post retirement.

– Dhyan Chand’s autobiography, “Goal” was published in 1952. The opening words of his autobiography reveal his humble nature, “You are doubtless aware that I am a common man, and then a soldier”

– Sadly, the hockey maestro passed away penniless on 3rd December 1979 by liver cancer.

  1. Recently british parliament has given him Bharat Gaurav award for his contribution to hockey but Dhyan chand deserves Bharat Ratna. UPA govt didn’t shown bill to give him this award, when it could have been bestowed upon him.

The greatest cricketer of all time, Sir Don Bradman on seeing Dhyan Chand said, “You score goals like runs” as per source – http://majordhyanchand.com
