It was an eventful year and it is definitely over. As far as India is concerned, we witnessed huge changes. Some were good, some were bad, but overall, we Indians had a lot to talk about in the past year. Take a look at some of the news that made big headlines in India, 2014.
The Modi Mantra- the elections that changed India
The Lok Sabha Elections of 2014, truly changed the Indian political scene. The Congress rule saw a downfall and BJP, with their super hero, Narendra Modi, saw a unanimous victory. This election also saw the highest voter turn-out. All this meant just one thing- that Indians finally realized the power that lay within them.
The Badaun Rape Case
Rape cases in India saw a rise in the year of 2014. In Badaun, UP, two sister hanged themselves to death after allegedly being raped. UP further saw many other cases of rape. But nothing more could be expected from the state where the Ministers themselves called rapes a ‘mistake’.
When Our Ministers Justified Rapes
We haven’t yet forgotten the time when Mulayam Singh Yadav, Samajwadi Party Chief, said,” Rape accused should not be hanged. Men make mistakes, rape is a mistake”. Neither can we forget Abu Azmi’s, “If a woman is caught (in a rape case), then both she and the boy should be punished. In India, there is death penalty for rape, but when there’s consensual sex outside marriage, there’s no death penalty against women.”
When MOM Made It to Space!
The Mars Orbiter Mission (MOM) or Mangalyaan reached Mars in 2014. This was India’s first Mars Satellite and it was also the cheapest interplanetary missions ever. India set a new record by succeeding in its very first attempt-an achievement that we are so proud of!
We are a Polio-free Nation
Yes, after innumerous efforts by the government, India was finally declared a polio-free nation by World Health Organisation in 2014. The anti-polio drive was launched in 1994, and this success was due to the various efforts put in by the government, non-profit organisations and social workers.
The Birth of Telangana
The state of Andhra Pradesh witnessed a bifurcation under the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act, 2014, and Telangana was born. For the next 10 years, Hyderabad will remain the joint capital.
India at the Commonwealth Games
India bagged 15 golds, 30 silvers and 19 bronze medals at the 2014 Commonwealth Games that was held at Glasgow. India finished 5th at the Games, last year.
The Cyclone ‘Hudhud’ that frayed Vishakhapatnam
On October 12, cyclone Hudhud hit Vishakhapatnam, killing over 100 people. It also destroyed property and left the state in havoc. The cyclone also hit parts of Odisha.
The Kashmir Floods
None of us has still forgotten the Kashmir floods. Thousands of people were stranded without food and shelter for days. And thousands of people got together to collect relief for the victims.
The Bilaspur Tragedy
A government camp in Bilaspur, Chattisgarh faced heavy criticisms and protests when 14 women died from futile sterilization surgeries. The situation brought medical negligence to light.
When Amma went To Jail
Probably one of the biggest news of 2014 was when AIADMK Chief Jayalalithaa was arrested and jailed for disproportionate assets case which had been going around for the last 18 years. Jayalalithaa also lost her post as the Chief Minister of Chennai after the verdict.
Saina Made Us Proud Again
India was all praise for badmintion champion Saina Nehwal when she went on to become the first Indian woman to win the China Open Super Series Premier on November 16.
Surely it was one of the eventful year, looking for many more positive events in 2015.
