  • India national blind cricket team claimed the 2018 Blind Cricket World Cup title by defeating Pakistan in the finals by 2 wickets.
  • Indian national cricket team won the ODI Series against South Africa in South Africa in first in History.
  • India national under-19 cricket team won the 2018 Under-19 Cricket World Cup held in New Zealand beating Australia in the Final.
  • India competed in 2016 Pyeongchang Winter Olympics & Paralympics respectively.

2018 Commonwealth Games

2018 events recap 2The 2018 Commonwealth Games, officially known as the XXI Commonwealth Games and commonly known as Gold Coast 2018, were an international multi-sport event for members of the Commonwealth that were held on the Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia, between 4 and 15 April 2018. It was the fifth time Australia had hosted the Commonwealth Games and the first time a major multi-sport event achieved gender equality by having an equal number of events for males and female athletes.

More than 4,400 athletes including 300 para-athletes from 71 Commonwealth Games Associations took part in the event. The Gambia which withdrew its membership from the Commonwealth of Nations and Commonwealth Games Federation in 2013, was readmitted on 31 March 2018 and participated in the event. With 275 sets of medals, the games featured 19 Commonwealth sports, including beach volleyball, para-triathlon, and women’s rugby sevens. These sporting events took place at 14 venues in the host city, two venues in Brisbane and one venue each in Cairns and Townsville.

India competed at the 2018 Commonwealth Games at Gold Coast, Australia from 4 to 15 April 2018. It was India’s 18th appearance at the Commonwealth Games. With 26 Gold medals and a total of 66 medals, India finished 3rd for the tournament. It was India’s best position since the 2010 Commonwealth Games, which they hosted.

2018 Asian Games

The 2018 Asian Games (Indonesian: Pesta Olahraga Asia 2018, Asian Games 2018), officially known as the 18th Asian Games, XVIII Asiad and also known as Jakarta–Palembang 2018, was a pan-Asian multi-sport event held from 18 August to 2 September 2018 in the Indonesian cities of Jakarta and Palembang.

For the first time, the Asian Games were co-hosted in two cities; the Indonesian capital of Jakarta (which is hosting the Games for the first time since 1962), and Palembang, the capital of the South Sumatra province. Events were held in and around the two cities, including venues in Bandung and some places in the provinces of West Java and Banten. The opening and closing ceremonies of the Games were held at Gelora Bung Karno Main Stadium in Jakarta. Also for the first time, eSports and canoe polo were contested as demonstration sports.

2018 events recap 3India at Asian Games 2018

India competed at the 2018 Asian Games in Jakarta and Palembang, Indonesia, from 18th August to 2nd September. Neeraj Chopra was the flag bearer for the opening ceremony while Rani Rampal was named as the flag bearer for the closing ceremony.

India bettered its previous best medal haul achieved 8 years earlier at the 2010 Asian Games in Guangzhou, China.

Lifting Ban On Entry Of Women Inside Sabarimala Temple

2018 events recap 14Putting an end to a centuries-old tradition, the Supreme Court ruled that women, irrespective of age, can enter Kerala’s Sabarimala temple. A five-judge Constitution bench, headed by Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra, said that the provision in the Kerala Hindu Places of Public Worship (Authorisation of Entry) Rules, 1965, which authorized the restriction, violated the right of Hindu women to practice religion. It also said that patriarchy in religion cannot be allowed to trump the right to pray.

Section 377 – Decriminalization Of Gay Sex

2018 events recap 15The Supreme Court, in a landmark judgment which came out in early September, decriminalized gay sex holding that consensual sex between two adults was covered under the right to privacy.

A five-judge bench of the Supreme Court headed by CJI Dipak Misra partly struck down Section 377 of Indian Penal Code (IPC) holding it violative of the fundamental right to privacy. However, the Supreme Court said that Section 377 would continue to be in force in cases of unnatural sex with animals and children.

Adultery Is No More A Crime

2018 events recap 16The Supreme Court scrapped Section 497 (adultery) of the Indian Penal Code, which punished a married man only for having a consensual sexual relationship with a married woman without the consent or connivance of her husband. Here are the main highlights of the verdict.

CJI Misra said adultery can be a ground for divorce but not a criminal offence.
