A small glance at the following table will give you an idea of what might be the current scenario of education in rural and tribal India. This data is from Census 2011 which might have changed over the years by now, but nevertheless is an eye opener.
The tribal sector is still way back when it comes to literacy rates and we need to do something about it! All of us saw the figures, felt bad for some time and then went back to our routine. But not Sohan Mahajan, Founder of EducationLinked which is an organization working day and night to educate every child in Maharashtra’s villages and rural areas.
It is a real life Swades story in the case of Sohan. He is a double Masters, studied in the US, had a plush job in the US and yet he let go off the luxuries and the better standard of living to come home and do something for his own country. With a vision full of aspirations and a heart full of motivation, Sohan founded EducationLinked in 2013. He was assisted by capable team mates like Gaurav Jadhav, Ketan Ingale, Ankush Margale, Sudhir Borhade, Anuja Gaitonde, S Narayanan, Jyoti Mahajan, Suresh Kapadnis, Tushar Bhamare and Deven Jhaveri.
Let us have a look at how EducationLinked is making a difference in the lives of hundreds of tribal students:
E-Learning Systems / Computer Labs
What differentiates EducationLinked from rest of the organizations working in the education sector, is the e-learning systems they are installing in tribal schools. These e-learning systems cover an array of school subjects, making studying interesting and fun with audio-visual format. E-learning system has helped students to grasp basic concepts faster along with better retention. Depending on the number of students in each school, the e-learning systems are installed with projector/TV, computers or tablets.
Computers have been installed in higher primary and secondary schools for students to get an exposure of computer basics. There is one computer installed for every 5 students.
Art of Living Yoga and Meditation Courses
EducationLinked believes in a holistic approach towards education and hence they have introduced Art of Living courses in the tribal school curriculum. The courses have benefited the students tremendously with increased concentration, reduced stress, focused mind and ever smiling faces!
Sohan himself is an Art of Living teacher and many of his team members too are followers of His Holiness Sri Sri Ravi Shankar ji. Hence they believe that a good education means overall development of a child. So EducationLinked’s model is catered to not just academic development of the kids, but their overall development so that they transform into pleasant personalities once they grow up.
Teachers Training Program
EducationLinked also works with the teachers to help them grow as teachers and be well versed with the new innovative teaching methods. The training program is diverse and it consists of lectures by eminent speakers, effective learning methodologies aiming towards overall development of students, live courses, e-learning training and counselling.
Along with the initiatives mentioned above, EducationLinked also provides better infrastructure to schools, awards individual student scholarships to private school students who come from financially challenged families and provides recreational accessories.
EducationLinked does not just install e-learning systems and says ‘Ok, now our job is done here’. Instead they go a step ahead and conduct evaluation tests at every school they are associated with till date. They conduct individual tests of all students annually and gauge the basic concepts of math and reading. They learn from these test results and constantly strive at improvement. Now that is a management way worth following!
They say numbers speak louder than words. Here is a snapshot of the milestones EducationLinked has achieved in such a small duration:
- More than 12,000 students benefited till now in more than 250 schools
- E-learning installed in more than 210 schools
- Computer labs started in more than 20 higher primary and secondary schools
