Chalk N Duster primarily the second release of this year is undoubtedly an unconventional movie. This movie creates a new genre for itself which is importance of education and teachers in everyone’s life.
To be honest even as a writer when I am penning down the review I am thankful not only to the professors who taught me journalism but also to my teachers who were in nursery and primary as when I was away from home for maximum time I was under the shade of my teachers who taught me everything. Values, morals and education. I could completely relate to this movie as my mother is herself a teacher and she has been in this profession from last 28 years and she has been devoted to this profession like any one of us who love their job.
The movie depicts human emotions and value of teachers which government as well as students fail and forget to appreciate.
To give a small brief about the story of the movie, Kantabai school is a private school located at a posh area. When the school had Induji (Zarina Wahab) as school principal, things were good for the teachers as well as students as she believed in giving free education to the needy and also levied no fees for teachers’ kids. Well with the growing politics in every field Kamini Gupta (Divya Dutta) sees education as business and decides to make the school numero uno by chucking and terminating experienced teachers and hiring new and inexperienced ones. While two honest and hardworking teachers are questioned by the management’s London return MBA played by Aarya Babbar. He along with Kamini Gupta decide to terminate the teachers and soon there is a battle between management and teachers.
Vidya Sawant who stays in Virar teaches kids of her area as well and doesn’t believe in selling education, rather she teaches them free of cost so that they learn and grow. On the other hand Jyoti who belongs to upper middle class family has a fairly good earning engineer husband (Sameer Soni).
Fabricated circumstances are created by Kamini and management leading to Vidya’s termination, but the real reason is that she teaches trigonometry in the simplest form which doesn’t go well with Kamini. Soon Jyoti with the help of media flashes out the real reason of management’s politics.
While the intriguing part of the movie is its climax when there is a quiz contest for 5 crores and the deal says that if they don’t answer 10 questions they will quit teaching as a profession and if they win Kantabai school with due respect will bring back Jyoti and Vidya back to the school along with the 5 crores.
Chalk N Duster touches upon various issues and marches forward in an attempt to make it an entertaining watch. As far as actors’ performance is concerned, Divya’s character transforms into a pure devil — power hungry and cunning to the core. She looks, acts and behaves like a typical commercial private school principal.
Shabana Azmi steals the show! Who says old actresses can only do roles of a grandmother or mother. You will simply fall for Shabana’s performance and can witness the true meaning of being a teacher. We all wish – if we had a maths teacher like her! Shabana as Vidya is extremely hard working, fierce, motivated and knowledgeable whom we call Guru.
Juhi Chawla has out shined herself. Known for her beautiful smile she has complimented Shabana Azmi. During the seized half she battles it out for teachers all over the world. Her speech is outstanding and each and everyone watching will surely have tears in their eyes.
Rishi Kapoor’s cameo is also worth watching. His screen presence lifts up the climax. Aarya Babbar has played his part well truly justified in today’s era. Sameer Soni as a supportive cast and husband has done a reasonable job.
Director Jayant Gilatar has made Chalk N Duster an emotional journey. You will surely keep crying through the second half.
There are few songs in the films which actually aren’t required as the movie itself is beautifully written and well crafted.
Chalk N Duster is a film worth your time. It’s fast, dramatic and meaningful. It’s worth watching for everyone and I am sure you will remember your teacher throughout the film.
