We did a piece on the addiction of porn in India and how it is affecting us and our future generations. A little extension of that article is this one talking about revenge and nonconsensual porn and how we can help the victim in this case.

In India last year in February, a young woman was raped by 5 men and the video was recorded to blackmail her to keep her mouth shut about the incident. However, this video made rounds on Whatsapp and no sooner became a part of the ‘porn world’ in India. An activist got involved after the rape footage came under her surveillance and she started the #ShameTheRapists campaign by keeping the victim anonymous and thereby achieved justice for the abused.

It is real and it can happen to anyone and here are steps to help the victims of nonconsensual porn –

First and foremost, do not blame the victim

This is easier said than done, especially in our Indian society where we have prescribed social norms for almost everything. Pournima (name changed) sent some nude pictures of her to her then boyfriend. After they broke up, her boyfriend posted those pictures online making her a part of the nonconsensual porn market.

It was but natural that everyone was blaming her when the images came to surface. But she trusted that guy and was in love with him at that time. How is blaming the victim going to help him or her in any specific way? The first and foremost rule here is stop blaming the victim, instead give the victim moral support to fight the situation.

Don’t be a part of the image circulation

Many a times, we become the porn perpetrators by forwarding the images to our loved ones warning them on what can happen in today’s world. Instead, we can just share a snippet of the story, warn our friends and family about the culprit. This will help to avoid image sharing and thus avoid vicious image circulation.

Talk to people who might be able to help

If nonconsensual porn is used as a way to blackmail or bully someone, it is important to involve a trusted adult in the conversation like school principal or a counsellor. An adult should be aware in this situation.

It is however wise to take permission from the victim first before reporting the incident as the victim should be comfortable in sharing the news with the said person.

If reporting is possible, do that

If the image/footage shared is on a social platform you can do your bit to help the victim get that image off social media. All big social media platforms have norms on not sharing explicit images and nudity. You can report a post by following these guidelines on Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, Tumblr and Twitter. Help someone to get rid of nonconsensual porn by taking this small step.

Seek help from NGOs and Authorities

Sometimes, the case at hand goes beyond our control and it is time to involve the NGOs and government authorities in this situation. Amnesty International is one such organization which caters to protecting and defending human rights. Come forward and seek help from the various avenues available today to us.

Let us join hands together to STOP this horrible act against humanity. Let us FIGHT together to eradicate this disease from the society.
