Sania Mirza and Rohan Bopanna comfortably defeated Britain’s Andy Murray and Heather Watson in the quarterfinals of Rio Olympics. Sania and Rohan have reached the Semifinals where they will face USA’s Serena Williams and R. Ram today at 11:30 pm IST.

Sania Mirza and Rohan’s Victory in the semis will ensure a silver medal for India. In case they suffer a loss in the semis, they will have a shot at bronze medal for the third place. Leander Paes is the only man for India to win an Olympic medal in tennis. He won a bronze at 1996 Atlanta games in the singles tournament.
Recent Wimbledon champion and defending Olympics champion Andy Murray was looking tired after a win in singles quarterfinals, which lasted for almost 2 hours. He seemed to saving his energy for the singles semis and looked far from his best in this doubles encounter. Murray’s partner, recent Wimbledon mixed doubles champion Heather Watson  also struggled with her serves.

Rohan and Sania took full advantage of their opponent’s weaknesses and were always one step ahead in the game. They were the better team with Rohan’s sharp serves and Sania’s powerful stroke play. Bopanna’s double fault and Sania’s consecutive volley errors was a nervous star, but the Indian pair backed it up with a strong performance. They won 6-4, 6-4 in just 67 minutes.
