When all Indians were gushing towards only one thing i.e. success at Rio Olympics, Shobha De tweeted something which spoiled the mood of all the fans and the entire sporting fraternity.
Indian fans were heartbroken, when Abhinav Bindra missed out on a bronze medal by just a mini fraction of distance and Men’s hockey team suffered a loss to Germany by conceding a goal in last three seconds. Even after all this everyone appreciated the effort put in by these athletes. Social media was all about appreciating the efforts they put in to reach this level. Suddenly Shobha De came up with an uncalled for tweet.
For those who don’t know Shobha De: She is a famous freelancer writer for several newspapers and magazines. Many times she has landed herself in controversies for her loose mouth statements.
Goal of Team India at the Olympics: Rio jao. Selfies lo. Khaali haat wapas aao. What a waste of money and opportunity.

This was not taken well by Indian sporting fraternity.
Here’s how the top names responded to this
Beijing Olympics gold medalist Abhinav Bindra replied her in the most precise manner.
that's a tad unfair. You should be proud of your athletes perusing human excellence against the whole world.

In an interview with CNN News 18, India’s two time gold medalist, Wrestler Sushil Kumar mentioned a solution of his own.

After that, Other Olympians joined in to express their disappointment.

a little harsh to belittle the hard work put in by our athletes …don't you think ?

Ms. De, kindly run on the hockey pitch for 60 mins & hold a rifle like Abhinav and Gagan. Bit tougher than u think https://t.co/XwZFKqZJjn

Sorabh Pant, one of the top standup comedians in India and a member of East India Comedy, posted a hilarious video of him mocking Shobha in a British accent and expressed his view on people criticizing and undermining Olympic athletes for no reason.
And there were some abusive tweets which should be completely condemned and ignored.
Along with Shobha De, there are many people impatiently criticizing our athletes for not winning medals. There is one thing to keep in mind, it is not easy to persuade Olympics sports in a country where majority of the perks are provided to the cricketers.
Year by Year India is improving in the Olympics contest, 56 athletes qualified in 2008 Olympics, 83 in 2012 and this year Indian contingent consists of 118 athletes. Yes, India is a big nation, but it is steadily progressing towards a bright sporting future.
